So it looks like they’ve decided to get serious in Washington. LOOKS being the key word here. If anything actually comes from the meetings between President Obama and Congressional leaders, well…that’s another matter. Mr. Obama is proposing massive reductions in Social Security and Medicare spending in exchange for Republican support on new taxes. Of course, if you think about it..where will we stand if this really doesn’t balance out? For millions of Americans it could be a tax increase without any recognizable benefit for years. Then again, the entitlement programs are so out of control, SOMETHING has to be done.
“Obviously, there will be some Democrats who don’t believe we need to do entitlement reform. But there seems to be some hunger to do something of some significance,” said a Democratic official familiar with the administration’s thinking. – The Washington Post
That statement goes to show you where the mindset of the Democrats is….as if you didn’t know that already. The Post also refers to the President’s proposals as a challenge to Democrat lawmakers during this period of the “assault” on government spending. As if government spending is something that SHOULD be defended. Another clue, right there.
Whether the Republicans cave on the no tax increase position remains to be seen. One thing for sure, President Obama will again position himself to take full advantage of any benefits. Then again, it could backfire on him just as easily.
