Here We Go Again!

As I return to publishing observations here, the nation sees itself on the brink of yet another presidential campaign. November 2016 will be here before you know it!…

We have 3 Republicans, Sen. Rand Paul (KY), Sen. Marco Rubio (FL), and Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) up against former Secretary of State and Democrat New York senator, Hillary Clinton.

The themes and memes are already underway in attempts to set the narrative. True to form, the Democrats have trotted out some of their worthless, tasteless voices to express insipid opinions on the Republican field. These quotes are definitely worth retaining as the campaigns move forward…

Things are just getting underway. That being said, I detect a hint of concern on the part of the Democrats. They’re realizing the lies they’ve told for decades are losing their political value..fast!

‘Obamanalysis’

Found an excellent piece by ‘The White House Dossier’s’ Keith Koffler. It was actually written for ‘The Politico’. I’ve followed the site for some time. However, this is the first time I’ve had an opportunity to feature a posting. It’s a great take on the growing arrogant attitude displayed by Mr. Obama….

OBAMA’S HUBRIS PROBLEM

“Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed.

Except the White House photographer.

That Obama assumed Americans would want an iconic photo of him privately mourning the victims of the bombings was emblematic of a kind of hubris that has enveloped the president and his White House as the president commences his second term.
130422213929-10-boston-nation-mourns-0422-horizontal-gallery

Hubris in a leader is an obnoxious thing, leading to imperiousness in governing. And it’s also a dangerous thing for a second-term president, often spelling trouble.

Unfortunately, this president’s acts of high handedness and self-absorption have been accumulating in the past several months at a blistering pace.

Even as the nation’s workers wilted under a struggling economy and high unemployment, Obama decided to take two round excursions to Hawaii at taxpayer expense over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Just six weeks later, he jetted down to Florida for a luxury four-day golf vacation where he played with Tiger Woods. Meanwhile Michelle Obama also took another vacation, skiing in Colorado.

"Hey!...We're entitled to have a good time!..."

“Hey!…We’re entitled to have a good time!…”

'Damn!...Just missed it!"

‘Damn!…Just missed it!”

"I said DON'T look at the camera!"

“I said DON’T look at the camera!”

Even as the sequester began to force those who work for him in the federal government to take furloughs and government services were scaled back – including, famously, the White House tours – Obama stepped up his golf, roaring out of the White House in his motorcade three Saturdays in a row for the 50-minute round trip drive to the Joint Base Andrews course.

"Aww...yeah!..."

“Aww…yeah!…”

In a true Marie Antoinette moment, Obama offered to pare back his pay by five percent as a show of empathy for those being furloughed. At annual salary of $400,000, that would force him to get by on a meager $380,000, in addition to a couple of hundred thousand extra dollars he can probably expect to make this year from book sales.

He had Memphis soul music legends throw a command performance for himself and the first lady in the East Room. He commended California’s attorney general for being the hottest of all the state AGs. He gave himself an exclusive viewing in the White House theater of the Jackie Robinson biopic, “42.”

On Saturday night, he’ll be partying with journalists and their celebrity guests at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association bash.

All while the nation continues to suffer under his stewardship of the economy.

When gun legislation he backed failed to pass last week, he threw an epic hissy fit in the Rose Garden, proclaiming his opponents liars who thought “it wasn’t worth it” to protect kids from gun violence.

"That's right..Congress f**ked up my plans to blame Republicans for this...I know and you know this has NOTHING to do with guns or saving lives...it's about control..."

“That’s right..Congress f**ked up my plans to blame Republicans for this…I know and you know this has NOTHING to do with guns or saving lives…it’s about control…”

He said contemptuously that what “binds Republicans together” is their commitment to helping the rich. He delivered his budget two months late to Congress.

"As President, it's my job..and my ONLY job...to blame Republicans for EVERYTHING...It doesn't matter whether there's any truth or logic to it...it will ALWAYS be their fault...And the media buys this garbage..hook, line, and sinker..."

“As President, it’s my job..and my ONLY job…to blame Republicans for EVERYTHING…It doesn’t matter whether there’s any truth or logic to it…it will ALWAYS be their fault…And the media buys this garbage..hook, line, and sinker…”

Such disregard for appearances and disdain for his opposition suggests a president who perceives himself as free from the fetters that keep normal people in line and give presidents a sense of perspective.

Obama is already giving off that “L’etat, c’est moi” vibe, effectively legislating from the Oval Office.

He is picking and choosing which laws to enforce – like deciding not to deport certain groups of immigrants who would have been protected by the failed Dream Act and opting not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act.

"I will only support legislation and enforce laws when it benefits me politically..."

“I will only support legislation and enforce laws when it benefits me politically…”

This could be just the beginning. He vowed last week, as he has in the past, to advance his gun control agenda on his own. “Even without Congress, my administration will keep doing everything it can to protect more of our communities,” Obama said.

The vast new Obamacare law gives him an endless array of regulations to implement, offering a cornucopia of opportunities to interpret the statute in ways that give him powers he shouldn’t have. The 900-page immigration bill may do the same, should it pass.

But hubris may not only lead a president to stretch power, it can result in abuse of power.

Certainly the core of Watergate was corruption, but only a sense of hubris could have convinced Richard Nixon – late in his first term – that he could get away with the covering it up.

When Bill Clinton bounded out of the White House residence to see Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office, he had to believe he was impervious to the rules that govern others – not just because of his behavior, but because he thought he wouldn’t get caught in flagrante delicto in the fishbowl that is the White House.

And what special exemption from reality did Ronald Reagan think he had when he convinced himself that he wasn’t paying ransom when he sent arms to Iran to try to secure the release of hostages the controlled in Lebanon?

If Obama starts to get too grand a sense of himself and sheds the last vestiges of concern for how others perceive him, it could lead him, as it has so many in positions of power, to believe he is beyond accountability. And that could end up as a tragedy for him, and for the nation.”

DESPITE DEAL ON ‘FISCAL CLIFF’, TAXES TO RISE FOR MOST AMERICANS

“While the tax package that Congress passed New Year’s Day will protect 99 percent of Americans from an income tax increase, most of them will still end up paying more federal taxes in 2013.

That’s because the legislation did nothing to prevent a temporary reduction in the Social Security payroll tax from expiring. In 2012, that 2-percentage-point cut in the payroll tax was worth about $1,000 to a worker making $50,000 a year.

The Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan Washington research group, estimates that 77 percent of American households will face higher federal taxes in 2013 under the agreement negotiated between President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans. High-income families will feel the biggest tax increases, but many middle- and low-income families will pay higher taxes too.

Households making between $40,000 and $50,000 will face an average tax increase of $579 in 2013, according to the Tax Policy Center’s analysis. Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will face an average tax increase of $822.

“For most people, it’s just the payroll tax,” said Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.

The tax increases could be a lot higher. A huge package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush was scheduled to expire Tuesday as part of the “fiscal cliff.” The Bush-era tax cuts lowered taxes for families at every income level, reduced investment taxes and the estate tax, and enhanced a number of tax credits, including a $1,000-per-child credit.

The package passed Tuesday by the Senate and House extends most the Bush-era tax cuts for individuals making less than $400,000 and married couples making less than $450,000.

Obama said the deal “protects 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small business owners from a middle-class tax hike. While neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted, this agreement is the right thing to do for our country.”

The income threshold covers more than 99 percent of all households, exceeding Obama’s claim, according to the Tax Policy Center. However, the increase in payroll taxes will hit nearly every wage earner.

Social Security is financed by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $113,700, with employers paying half and workers paying the other half. Obama and Congress reduced the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011 and 2012, saving a typical family about $1,000 a year.

Obama pushed hard to enact the payroll tax cut for 2011 and to extend it through 2012. But it was never fully embraced by either party, and this time around, there was general agreement to let it expire.

The new tax package would increase the income tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent on income above $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for married couples. Investment taxes would increase for people who fall in the new top tax bracket.

High-income families will also pay higher taxes this year as part of Obama’s 2010 health care law. As part of that law, a new 3.8 percent tax is being imposed on investment income for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples making more than $250,000.

Together, the new tax package and Obama’s health care law will produce significant tax increases for many high-income families.

For 2013, households making between $500,000 and $1 million would get an average tax increase of $14,812, according to the Tax Policy Center analysis. Households making more than $1 million would get an average tax increase of $170,341.

“If you’re rich, you’re almost certain to get a big tax increase,” Williams said.”

If you’re like me, your wondering if anyone is AWAKE at Team Romney. The clock is ticking and Mitt Romney seems to be sleepwalking through this campaign. Lackluster ads..which I’ve YET to see on television.., half-hearted responses to whatever President Obama throws out there….and virtually no offense whatsoever! It’s frustrating! His supporters are frustrated, discouraged…and genuinely frightened! I’m not sure what his advisors are telling him, but one thing for sure…it ain’t working!

The country continues to suffer under the MOST DIVISIVE AND DISHONEST President in United States history, yet Romney seems to be encountering a real struggle convincing voters of those facts. I know a good part of it is the plain stupidity of vast numbers of the American electorate. But, he doesn’t seem to be expending any energy to at least try!

In the meantime, President Obama’s support grows due in large part to the perception that he is nothing more than the caretaker-in-chief….witness the woman in Cleveland who bases her support for Mr. Obama because he “gave” her a cellphone! That sort of garbage should incense EVERY, SINGLE AMERICAN who earns a paycheck!

“Romney sucks!”

I suppose there are not enough Americans out there who see anything wrong with this…they don’t care if it continues…or even expands!…This is how much we’ve devolved….

Charles Krauthamer asks the question: Why is Romney hesitant to make big-picture criticisms of Obama’s policies?

Message to Mitt: Make the Case

In mid-September, 2008, Lehman Brothers collapsed and the bottom fell out of the financial system. Barack Obama handled it coolly. John McCain did not. Obama won the presidency. (Given the country’s condition, he would have won anyway. But this sealed it.)

Four years later, mid-September, 2012, the U.S. mission in Benghazi went up in flames, as did Obama’s entire Middle East policy of apology and accommodation. Obama once again played it cool, effectively ignoring the attack and the region-wide American humiliation. “Bumps in the road,” he said. Nodding tamely were the mainstream media, who would have rained a week of vitriol on Mitt Romney had he so casually dismissed the murder of a U.S. ambassador, the raising of the black Salafist flag over four U.S. embassies, and the epidemic of virulent anti-American demonstrations from Tunisia to Sri Lanka (!) to Indonesia.

Obama seems not even to understand what happened. He responded with a groveling address to the U.N. General Assembly that contained no fewer than six denunciations of a crackpot video, while offering cringe-worthy platitudes about the need for governments to live up to the ideals of the U.N.

The U.N. is an institution of surpassing cynicism and mendacity, but the speech was so naïve it would have made a fine middle-school commencement address. Instead, it was a plaintive plea by the world’s alleged superpower to be treated nicely by a roomful of the most corrupt, repressive, tin-pot regimes on earth.

Yet Romney totally fumbled away the opportunity. Here was a chance to make the straightforward case about where Obama’s feckless approach to the region’s tyrants has brought us, connecting the dots of the disparate attacks as a natural response of the more virulent Islamist elements to a once-hegemonic power in retreat. Instead, Romney did two things:

He issued a two-sentence critique of the initial statement issued by the U.S. embassy in Cairo on the day the mob attacked. The critique was not only correct but vindicated when the State Department disavowed the embassy statement. However, because the critique was not framed within a larger argument about the misdirection of U.S. Middle East policy, it could be — and was — characterized as a partisan attack on the nation’s leader at a moment of national crisis.

Two weeks later at the Clinton Global Initiative, Romney did make a foreign-policy address. Here was his opportunity. What did he highlight? Reforming foreign aid.

Yes, reforming foreign aid! A worthy topic for a chin-pulling joint luncheon of the League of Women Voters and the Council on Foreign Relations. But as the core of a challenger’s major foreign-policy address amid a Lehman-like collapse of the Obama Doctrine?

It makes you think how far ahead Romney would be if he were actually running a campaign. His unwillingness to go big, to go for the larger argument, is simply astonishing.

For six months, he’s been matching Obama small ball for small ball. A hit-and-run critique here, a slogan-of-the-week there. His only momentum came when he chose Paul Ryan and seemed ready to engage on the big stuff: Medicare, entitlements, tax reform, national solvency, a restructured welfare state. Yet he has since retreated to the small and safe.

When you’re behind, however, safe is fatal. Even his counterpunching has gone miniature. Obama has successfully painted Romney as an out-of-touch, unfeeling plutocrat whose only interest is to cut taxes for the rich. Romney has complained in interviews that it’s not true. He has proposed cutting tax rates, while pledging that the share of the tax burden paid by the rich will remain unchanged (by “broadening the base” as in the wildly successful, revenue-neutral Reagan-O’Neill tax reform of 1986).

But how many people know this? Where is the speech that hammers home precisely that point, advocates a reformed tax code that accelerates growth without letting the rich off the hook, and gives lie to the Obama demagoguery about dismantling the social safety net in order to enrich the rich?

Romney has accumulated tons of cash for 30-second ads. But unless they’re placed on the scaffolding of serious speeches making the larger argument, they will be treated as nothing more than tit for tat.

Make the case. Go large. About a foreign policy in ruins. About an archaic, 20th-century welfare-state model that guarantees 21st-century insolvency. And about an alternate vision of an unapologetically assertive America abroad unafraid of fundamental structural change at home.

It might just work. And it’s not too late.
